The best way to send parcels is by courier. It is one of the safest, quickest and easiest ways to ship items, both within our borders as well as internationally. Not only is it very affordable, thanks to the internet it is now also only a matter of minutes to organise to have your package collected. But before you start doing your Christmas shopping to buy an expensive bottle of whiskey for your brother in the UK, your grandmother’s favourite perfume and some Christmas crackers for your cousin, make sure you read our list of prohibited items first. We’ve all fantasised about winning the lottery, and perhaps you swore that you would either give your sister the winning ticket or share it with her. If Lady Luck decides to pay you a visit, don’t immediately call your courier. Not only is it a bad idea to send lottery tickets, (imagine it falling into the wrong hands) it is also not allowed.

Don’t part with your identity

Passports, for obvious reasons, are not allowed to be couriered. If it needs to cross the border, it can only do so if you are holding it.

Weapons are a very obvious no-no. Any items that may be construed as lethal such as guns, swords, daggers and knives, whether they are authentic or replicas, may not be sent via courier.

Heavenly scents

Sending perfumes and other fragrances, for instance aerosols or any other smellies containing alcohol can unfortunately not be sent by courier.

Explosive goodies

It goes without saying that hazardous items such as explosives, corrosives, as well as toxic, magnetic, and radioactive substances may not be couriered. Unfortunately the humble Christmas cracker fits into this category as well.

Body parts

Your courier is not allowed to send any medical samples, tissue samples, bodily fluids and human or animal remains on your behalf. The forensic anthropologists among us will unfortunately have to make alternative arrangements.

Ice ice baby

Thinking of sending your family something really cool for Christmas? Unfortunately that’s not possible. Any type of refrigeration unit such as fridges and freezers and even dry ice in a bucket cannot be sent via courier service.

Keep your naughties to yourself

Unfortunately, those magazines with the naughty pictures need to stay hidden under your bed. The courier is not allowed to send those anywhere. And that goes for DVDs too.

The addictive stuff

Any type of tobacco as well as drugs, whether medicinal or otherwise, cannot be couriered. Unfortunately you’ll have to tell your grandfather to buy his own box of cigars.

Beverages of the alcoholic kind

Festive beverages such as whiskey, beer, wine, liqueur and even bubbly are not allowed in the courier van. You’ll unfortunately have to drink it all yourself. Cheers!

Courier services are not allowed to ship any valuable jewellery items such as rings, necklaces, pendants, watches and brooches.

Bigger things

If you were considering sending someone a four-wheel DIY surprise, think again. Large and bulky car parts such as bumpers, car doors, grills, windscreens or any other bodywork are a definite no-no.

Edible goodies

Food, whether cooked, raw, frozen, vacuum packed, canned or otherwise (un)prepared can not be sent by courier.

Animals – whether dead or alive

Animals, whether they are alive and kicking or not, don’t belong in a parcel in the back of a courier van. I mean really. If you absolutely have to take them somewhere, you need to organise the right transport for them. Any other animal products such as fur, skins, horns and ivory can also not be transported via courier.
